About Future Crafts Project

Future Crafts Project in Keio University Graduate School of Media Design is a material interaction research project that focuses on the characteristics of materials and enriches people’s lives from the perspective of craftsmen. We aim to develop interfaces and fabrications, expressions of media art, and practical social implementations such as educational kits.

In this project, we explore how to materialize information from the digital world into the real world. A familiar example is a 3D printer that prints 3D data in a three-dimensional structure. There is also a future interface that can transform itself into a shape customized to the person. This kind of technology, called Digital Materialization, can be applied in various fields to create appropriate food, clothing, and space. It is also a topic that can be applied to media art and other areas of expression that connect information and the real world.

Based on these themes, we are researching by carefully observing various existing and new materials from a craftsman’s point of view and hacking the materials. By focusing on manufacturing methods and materials that have not been focused on in the past, we create solutions to various social issues from a novel perspective and propose novel methods.

For Collaborative Research Projects.

The Future Crafts Project is conducting joint research with companies on several research themes, including food entertainment and fashion technology. We can discover a common awareness of problems and develop new methods to solve them with diverse members. We are also working on cross-disciplinary projects with product designers and other artists. We also hold presentations and demonstrations periodically. If you are interested in researching with us, please contact us using the contact form.

For Applicants to Our Group.

Currently, we have a wide range of students with backgrounds in science and engineering, design, and art areas, who communicate and conduct research in both English and Japanese. Although most of our activities have been conducted online since just after the launch in spring 2020, we are actively communicating through general and group meetings and workshops to conduct our respective research projects.

We are looking forward to working with people who have questions that change society and are very interested in making things, using their strengths based on individual experiences. If you are interested in the project, please apply from the master’s or doctoral program of the Graduate School of Media Design, Keio University.
